Vocabulary

Learning the vocabulary of a study of a disciplinary field is often the first step in entering that field. While attaching labels to things may be a bit constricting to a point, one of the direct benefits of learning a field’s vocabulary is being able to establish a common ground with the people in the field— people who study a subject matter with a specific level of detail and understand it using a certain structure.

As this blog explores a few art forms that are informed by many other fields, you may also want to be acquainted by at least part of the vocabulary of those fields.

Some of these terms may sound familiar. Some do exist in our common language but can hold a very specific meaning in the context of a specific field. Other terms may not be found in common language at all.
